Now My Eye Sees You
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You. Therefore I abhor myself, And repent in dust and ashes.” Job 42:1-6 NKJV
“I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, But now my eye sees You” describes the difference between information and revelation. We may have a lot of information about God but it takes revelation to know God personally, intimately. Biblical revelation is when God reveals something to us. The greatest gift we can receive is God revealing something about Himself. It's why the angels around God's throne cry to each other, "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord". (Isaiah 6:3) Crying out, "Holy" isn't part of the Angel's job description so that they must do it, it is a reflexive reaction to what they are seeing.
lt's like a sports fan saying to their buddy, "wow! did you see that incredible play. Unbelievable! I've never seen anything like it." The joy of exclamation isn't forced but automatic because of the extra-ordinary things they beheld. The angels are continually crying, “Holy" because God is continually revealing more glory to them. The angels (and every other created being) would be torched if God revealed all His glory at one time. Revelation of God is the essence of true worship. The more revelation about God the more fluent and authentic our worship. There is a second revelation that immediately follows a revelation of God. It’s the revelation about ourselves. After God speaks, Job describes himself as "vile" and expresses humility by saying, "I lay my hand over my mouth." (Job 40:4–5) We need both a revelation of God's holiness and a revelation about our lack of holiness to gain true repentance and true humility.
The prophet Isaiah, like Job, was a very godly man in his day but after seeing the revelation of the throne of God he says, "Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.” (Isaiah 6:5) The Lord never leaves us long is in this state of self-loathing least we despair. "And he (angel) touched my mouth with it (live coal from the altar), and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your iniquity is taken away, And your sin purged.” (Isaiah 6:7) May the Lord give us a fresh revelation of Himself today that we might live upright and holy lives amongst this evil generation.
