Everlasting Foundation
“When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.” Proverbs 10:25
The whirlwind in scripture represents the judgment of God that comes directly out of the sin of man. God’s retributive justice comes in many forms but the whirlwind comes from a small sin that grows into a massive force that brings destruction. The Semites were nomads who traveled in tents so they developed a great fear for fierce winds that would destroy their tents held by pegs and cords. Whirlwinds (tornadoes) would be the most destructive of the strong winds they would encounter. Hosea prophetically declared “They [the wicked] sow the wind, And reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7). Actions have reactions, often severe ones. Hosea warns that those who engage in reckless or sinful behavior will face significant judgment.
The Lord delivers the righteous out or in the midst of these times of divine judgment when the wickedness sown by previous generations reaches its full measure. We always desire to be delivered out of divine judgment (e.g. Lot in Sodom and Gomorrah) but many times the Lord sovereignly decrees we are to be delivered through judgment (10 Egyptian plagues). The Lord gives the righteous an everlasting foundation which is able to withstand times when the whirlwind ravages the land. We live in a time when a great whirlwind is arising and the righteous must stand on the everlasting foundations. May we stand today with the Church who is "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone" (Eph 2:20) and like Abraham, walk by faith towards "the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God" (Heb 11:10) and we will not be moved (Ps 46:2)!
